ITS Action Plan for Europe

EU MapFrom 1996 onwards Ankerbold was retained by the European Commission to provide strategic advice on the deployment of Intelligent Transport Systems in Europe.

John Miles was asked to conduct a series of in-depth interviews with key stakeholders  jointly with the European Commission in 2008. Interviews were held with a number of leading figures closely involved in the development of ITS in different parts of Europe. The purpose was to obtain their views on the policies and priorities for future development of ITS in Europe in preparation for the EC Action Plan and European Directive on ITS.

Interviewees were all senior figures from the public and private sectors and included two from research and development organisations which bridge both sectors. The idea of an ITS action plan for Europe was universally welcomed but the European Commission’s initial proposals were criticised for not being ambitious enough.

More recently John Miles and his colleagues carried out an analysis for the European Commission of different arrangements for  public sector funding of ITS across Europe.
